Chronic Pain

Acute pain occurs during and after harm or damage to the part/s of the body. It is short lived and fades once healing takes place. If the pain continues beyond the natural time of healing despite efforts to relieve it and persists for 6 months or more, it’s classified as Chronic Pain

If the pain continues beyond the natural time of healing despite efforts to relieve it and persists for 6 months or more, it’s classified as Chronic Pain. It causes a vicious cycle of pain and disability. It gives rise to number of mental health co-morbidities like depression, anxiety and other conditions like insomnia, tiredness etc.

Although the exact cause is not known, there is evidence to show that the nervous system undergoes changes and pain signals are spontaneously generated in the nerves which the brain interprets as real pain. Over time the body’s ability to control pain is weakened when chronic pain sets in. Clinicians often try various modalities like medications, Physiotherapy to control pain. When other treatment options have failed, patients may become candidates for the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for their chronic pain, particularly due to it being a safe, noninvasive and medication free option.

    rTMS

It has been known for some time that stimulation of the superficial layer of the brain, the cortex can lead to decrease of chronic pain. The Transcranial magnetic stimulation interferes with the pain signals that the brain sends to the spinal cord and strengthens the way the brain combats the pain in many people. rTMS has been used in several research centres in UK for pain management. The Walton pain clinic have treated over 200 patients during a research funded study and found it very efficacious

    Research Evidence

    1) Recent studies completed at Stanford University, patients experiencing chronic pain were able to get relief from their symptoms following a series of TMS sessions. These results were also found in patients experiencing fibromyalgia, a painful musculoskeletal condition characterized by pain and fatigue without obvious cause.
