Alcohol Dependence

Dangerous use or overuse of alcohol can arise for many reasons and unfortunately the consequences can be serious; physically and psychologically.

Drinking large amounts daily has a range of long-term health consequences, including liver damage, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Alcohol can also contribute to mental health problems, as it is a depressant which interferes with the brain’s neurotransmitters.

How much alcohol is too much?

In terms of units, acceptable limit is 14 units per week for women and 21 units for men – but a far simpler measure, is that if alcohol is causing problems in your life, then you have a problem. It will not get better of its own accord, it will get worse, so best to seek the specialist help you need now.

    • Do not feel right without a drink, or need a drink to start the day
    • Get very shaky, sweaty, and anxious/tense a few hours after your last drink
    • Regularly drink more than you intend to

rTMS offers a medication-free approach to treating alcohol cravings and dependence and  can be used to break the vicious cycle of craving, bingeing/using, and withdrawal. A course of treatment for alcohol dependence can be 10-15 sessions or more. For recently detoxified alcohol dependent patients, its best done after 15 days of abstinence.

      Research Evidence

Clinical studies are on-going into rTMS for various types of addiction. A recent clinical analysis indicates rTMS can reduce craving and consumption levels in drug and eating addiction.

-There is increasing scientific evidence that rTMS can reduce alcohol craving in recently detoxified patients and assisting them to remain abstinent (Boggio et al, 2008, Mishra et al, 2010, Mishra et al, 2015, and Herremans et al, 2015).
